Welcome to RobertMousemanThompson.com
The Late Robert “Mouseman” Thompson (1876 – 1955) was a one man arts and crafts movement. Inspired by carvings he had seen on Ripon cathedral Thompson (trained as an engineer) decided to go against mass production and instead turned to traditional techniques in furniture manufacture.
By 1919 he had taught himself to use traditional tools and using an adze on naturally seasoned English oak he developed a rippled effect that was somehow perfectly flat. His signature was that of a carved mouse. It is thought that the mouse signature first came about when one of his craftsmen remarked that they where all as poor as church mice, he then carved a mouse upon a church screen that he was working on.
The family business (Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd) in Kilburn, North Yorkshire is still going strong today and now has 35 craftsmen producing Mouseman furniture, they have each served a five year apprenticeship and a have unique mouse signature to enable their pieces to be told apart. We deal in small old & vintage Mouseman collectables, why? because we love them and thousands of others around the world feel the same. |
